When a Voice Finds Home

In March 2024, Back2Back Monterrey’s Hope Program welcomed a new student into a Hope Home. Daniel* was referred to the program through child welfare services, and when he first arrived, it was clear just how small his world had been before arriving on campus. Because he was brought by the government, Daniel had no previous experience or history with Back2Back programming; family-style care was new to him, as was living in spaces where he felt comfortable and safe to use his voice. As a result of his prior experiences, he didn’t make eye contact, his speech was short and quite limited, and he often hid behind adults to avoid being seen. His posture and interactions with others often communicated his fear, coupled with screams instead of words.

After he became situated in his new home, he attended an educational support center to aid in his academic challenges. He also received therapies to help support his development. His house parents and the peers he shared life and space with were patient, trusting that with time, Daniel would know he was loved and safe, and they took steps to remind him of both every day.

Recently, Back2Back staff gathered to wish a staff couple farewell, and attendees were invited to share words of encouragement and gratitude. Daniel surprised everyone in attendance when he raised his hand, asking for the microphone! He stood before the crowd and shared deep gratitude for the couple, thanking them for the many ways they showed up for him, holding space as he learned and grew in his confidence.

This transformation is one that all who know Daniel celebrate – living under safe, consistent care within a family changed his life and sense of security forever. Today, the young boy who used to hide and express emotions through screaming can converse with peers and adults; he exhibits confidence and openness, and he willingly steps into conversations with others. This progress is a reflection of his resilience and also illustrative of the power that comes with nurturing, protective environments.
