When Esther* and Golibe* first arrived at Back2Back’s Education Center, they couldn’t read.
They were overwhelmed by the alphabet; it felt overwhelming. While their peers were reading books and preparing for secondary school, they were just beginning to recognize letters.
Without education, their future looked painfully familiar.
In their rural community, many girls never have the opportunity to finish school. The loss of a parent or financial hardship often forces them to leave the classroom long before they have the chance to discover their own capabilities. Some begin working to help their families survive, while others are pressured into marriages as adolescents, their childhood ended before it’s fully begun.
For girls growing up in this type of environment, poverty isn’t simply an experience; it becomes an expected inheritance.
Thankfully, that isn’t how their story ended.
At the Education Center, Esther and Golibe found something every child needs: consistent encouragement and the patience of safe adults who refused to give up on them.
Letter by letter. Word by word. Day after day.
The girls who once struggled to recognize letters are now reading fluently.
Their journey hasn’t been easy. Twice, they have sat for the entrance examination into secondary school. Twice they have fallen short.
For many students, that kind of disappointment would be enough to walk away.
But Esther and Golibe aren’t most students.
They used every step backwards to help propel themselves forward. They returned to classes determined to keep learning. They continue studying, practicing, and preparing to take the exam again, believing their future is still worth pursuing.
Today, they are known throughout the Education Centre as young ladies who do not give up and for the ways they encourage others. They are respectful, eager to help, and have become examples of perseverance for girls walking the same path.
Their story reminds us that restoration rarely happens overnight.
Sometimes it begins with something as simple as learning the alphabet or trying again after disappointment.
And sometimes it looks like two girls refusing to believe that poverty would have the final word over their futures. Because someone chose to invest in them, Esther and Golibe are still writing a different story. One filled with possibility instead of limitation.
One where childhood is protected, education continues, and hope grows stronger with every page they turn.
