“When will I get a sponsor?”

Back2Back Ministries | "When will I get a sponsor?”

Last year, staff at a partnering children’s home in Monterrey were faced with a truth they couldn’t ignore: ten children were still waiting for sponsors.

Letter-writing days are always filled with excitement. Children sit down with paper and markers, thinking about the people across the world praying for them, encouraging them, and reminding them they are known. But for Mauricio*, those days often ended differently.

Mauricio, now a teenager, shares a home on campus with three other boys. And after each round of sponsor letters, he quietly asked the same question:

“When will I get a sponsor?”

It was a question holding more than curiosity. Around him, his peers experienced the joy of receiving letters written just for them, someone asking about school, praying for them, remembering details about their lives. Having a sponsor meant more than financial support; it provided consistency, relationship. It meant being known by name.

Mauricio longed for that too.

During another round of letter writing, two of the boys living with him did something the staff will never forget. Instead of only writing about themselves, they wrote to their own sponsors asking them to pray for their roommates who were still waiting.

“I want my friends to experience this same joy as I do,” one of the boys wrote. “Will you pray so my friends can have sponsors, too, please?”

Months later, in February, Mauricio finally received the news he’d long been hoping for: he had a sponsor! And the other boy in his house also received a sponsor.

Today, only two children at the home are still waiting.

Moments like this reveal something powerful about sponsorship. Children aren’t simply receiving resources; they’re experiencing stability and encouragement, they know someone chooses them, and they remain connected to their story. A sponsor becomes a steady voice reminding a child they are seen, prayed for, and deeply valued.

And for children who have experienced instability or interruption in their lives, that kind of consistent care changes everything.

It changes what they believe about themselves.

Sometimes restoration begins with something as simple as a letter, a prayer, or a child finally hearing the words: “You have a sponsor.”

There are children all over the world still awaiting their first sponsorship letter. Will you consider joining us in restoring childhood? Find out more today.
