Bella’s* life began with obstacles. She experienced seizures and other health challenges that her family wasn’t equipped to manage. For a time, they were separated, and Bella was moved to a specialized residential home for children with disabilities. It wasn’t a matter of not loving her; they wanted their daughter home. But loving her meant learning how to care for her well enough so they could all live together again.
They lived with the ache of separation, but found hope in Bella receiving the specialized care she needed. She was diagnosed with multiple disabilities, and this clarity was good news; now as a family, they could seek a way forward.
“When Bella left home, they never saw it as an end to their family,” shared David Suess, Back2Back staff. “They used this time to prepare for her homecoming.”
The day came: Bella returned home. Reunification brought tremendous joy and, with it, the realities of caring for Bella in the midst of their everyday life. She sometimes experienced emotional dysregulation, irritability, and intense reactions to frustration. These moments could escalate quickly, and her family wanted to soothe her, so they kept learning.
Bella now receives psychiatric and neurological care, with doctors carefully monitoring and adjusting medications as needed. She recently underwent additional testing to help her medical team better understand her needs. Alongside them, Bella’s family worked diligently to recognize her needs. They were serious about uncovering new ways to help her feel safe and supported at home.
Every member of her family works to that end.
Bella’s mother lives with a disability of her own and, despite financial hardship, shows up for her daughter every day. Her father works long hours to provide for their family and still intentionally makes time to be with his daughter when he comes home. Her sister helps with daily routines and medications, offering her the steady reassurance that she is surrounded by people who are committed to her. They are learning, together, what it means to make their home a place where Bella can stay.
Today, Bella attends a specialized school where she has opportunities to learn and develop new skills. Reunification doesn’t end the day a child walks back into their family home. It is, in many ways, where the work begins. For Bella’s family, bringing her home meant choosing to enter into the complexity of her needs rather than allowing those needs to keep them apart. There are still difficult days, but this family has chosen to grow in their capacity to care for her.
With every challenge overcome and step forward, a different future becomes possible: one where Bella receives an education, accesses specialized care, develops greater independence, and grows surrounded by the people who love her most.
Bella’s story reminds us hope is not the absence of hardship. Sometimes, hope looks like a family learning what they don’t yet know.
