The Day She Came Back

Back2Back Ministries | The Day She Came Back

Five years ago, staff at a partnering community center in India noticed an empty seat usually occupied by a 15-year-old girl.

She had been part of the program for years. She saw the space as more than a place to eat and study; it was a place where she was truly seen and known. Staff watched her grow, learning alongside peers, slowly building a future beyond the limitations surrounding her community.

Then, she left to visit her hometown during a school holiday and didn’t return.

When classes resumed without her, staff reached out to her family to check in. The conversation offered devastating news; at 15, she had been assaulted, was expecting a child, and was now married to the baby’s father. Her parents broke down crying beneath the weight of grief and helplessness as they shared their daughter’s current state.

Contact was lost after that conversation, and for five years, no one heard from her.

Then last year, Goldie, Back2Back India Site Director, noticed a familiar face standing outside the center, and beside her, a young boy.

It was her.

And beside her stood six-year-old Parth*.

Tears filled her eyes as she and Goldie made eye contact. After years away, shame and pain covered her story, but still, she took a step of bravery.

“Can my son join the program?” she asked meekly.

Without hesitation, Goldie agreed.

It was a moment that mattered more to Parth and his mom than anyone outside the story could fully understand. He had been rejected by his village due to the circumstances surrounding his birth. Carrying the consequences of his mother’s suffering, he felt shame. Without intervention, this would become his legacy: an isolated family, a child believing he’s unwanted; no one feeling belonging.

One person’s decision permanently impacted Parth and his family’s story.

Goldie’s yes that day was a lifeline. Parth and his parents were handed a do-over. He felt, for the first time, they weren’t going to be left alone to navigate each day; they would no longer be marked by distress.

This is what Goldie envisioned when the center first opened – a space provided by advocates who believe in restoration and healing. And it is a space that remains safe to those who’ve entered before; it was waiting for Parth and his family’s return.

The family joined the Strong Families Program shortly after. His parents attended parenting classes, focusing on trauma-informed care, healthy relationship practices, and emotional healing. Parth fully invested in his studies and connecting with peers.

During those sessions, his father opened up honestly about his guilt and shame, and the time he’d been carrying it. He asked difficult questions about how to love his family well, how to become a better husband and father. Through therapy, he learned how trauma impacts entire family systems, not just one person. He now understands those instances shape relationships and emotional responses; he now knows trauma impacts how we view ourselves – not because of something we’ve done, but because of decisions made for us.

The home and the family within changed little by little.

Today, Parth is growing up inside a different story than the one that once threatened to define him. And it is because people around the world believe reconciliation is not only possible, but worthwhile. Parth and his family could have remained divided and shamed, left wandering. Instead, they are experiencing repair in real time, learning to draw close to each other and God. This is the power of Strong Families investment.

Parth is learning in school, surrounded by encouragement and consistency. He is a witness to his parents choosing healing and growth together. In a home once shaped by shame and isolation, there is now stability and connection. There is hope.

The family’s story is still unfolding. Healing rarely happens all at once, and restoration is not linear. But today, Parth and his parents no longer face their struggles alone.

Five years earlier, a frightened teenage girl disappeared from the center carrying a future she never would have chosen. Today, her son walks through those same doors.

He is learning, and surrounded by people who know his name.

And every week, he watches his parents choose healing over shame.

The story that once threatened to define this family is no longer the only story being told.
