The Award She Didn’t Expect

Back2Back Ministries | The Award She Didn’t Expect

Mother’s Day in the D.R. is a widely celebrated holiday. Always on the last Sunday of May, stores fill with shoppers seeking the perfect gift, families gather around tables, and mothers are honored and celebrated.

But for some mothers, being celebrated feels unfamiliar.

This year, Mindy, a Back2Back staff member, planned a special Mother’s Day gathering. 18 women gathered for an afternoon created just for them.

The celebration was set up like an awards ceremony. One by one, each mother was called forward and recognized for the ways she faithfully cares for her children. Staff members had written personal notes and certificates highlighting the unique strengths they see in each woman.

For many, it was their first time attending the group. Several shared afterward that they hoped to come back.

Among those gathered was a mother with three children enrolled in Back2Back’s education program. Her life is rarely quiet. Between raising three children and navigating the daily pressures of providing for her family, most days are spent meeting needs, solving problems, and simply making it through.

The women had been invited to dress up for the event. The afternoon was Oscar-themed, complete with awards and special recognition for each mother.

When she arrived, however, she quietly slipped into a seat near the back of the room, wearing jeans and a T-shirt. While other women posed for photos and chatted together, she seemed content to stay in the background.

Then, to her surprise, her name was called.

She slowly made her way to the front.

Staff presented her with an award recognizing her for the countless ways she continues showing up for her children day after day.

As she returned to her seat, she looked down at the certificate in her hands.

Then she read it again.

And again.

She studied every word carefully, almost as if she couldn’t quite believe it had been written about her.

The award wasn’t simply a fun part of the celebration; it was recognition.

A reminder that someone had noticed.

Someone had seen the effort behind the long days, the sacrifices that often go unseen, and the love she continues to pour into her children.
