Not Left Alone

Back2Back Ministries | Not Left Alone

There was a moment when everything started to shift for Amani* and Viraj*.

They’d watched their father grow more ill each week, and eventually, he couldn’t keep fighting. As they grieved his death, their futures suddenly felt uncertain in ways they couldn’t name. Following this loss, they moved to Back2Back’s India Hope campus. There, they found a safety that felt grounding in a new way.

Questions surfaced in the days following their father’s death. They started quietly, then became impossible to ignore. Would the illness that took their father’s life become a threat to them, as well?

For two children facing grief and uncertainty, these realities didn’t remain in the background; the loss of their father and family unit settled into their everyday lives. It manifested as difficulty in school, through relationships, and it informed what they believed was possible for themselves. They settled into their everyday lives, manifesting as difficulty in school, through relationships, and informed what they believed was possible for themselves.

The Back2Back team stepped in, reminding the family they weren’t going to be left to navigate it alone. After medical testing, Viraj was also diagnosed with the illness that took his father’s life. To keep himself and the other boys he was living with safe, he returned home with his mother and was connected to the medical care he needed. Though the siblings were separated, the family shared a collective hope that stability would take root once again, but it didn’t come easily.

Their mother was later diagnosed with the same illness and arrived at Back2Back offices overwhelmed and afraid. “What will happen to my children if I can’t be there for them?” she pleaded with Goldie, Back2Back India Director, desperate for hope. It was a question that carried weight, and it wasn’t hypothetical.

Faithful investment allowed staff to remain present. They walked alongside the family, encouraging their mother to care for herself well, and connected them to ongoing medical and community support. For a time, this was the path forward, and the family firmly walked it.

However, Amani and Viraj’s mother’s health steadily declined. Two years ago, she passed away. Overnight, a brother and sister were left to navigate a world without either of their parents. Their grief grew, and uncertainty increased alongside it.

Without intervention, their story was already moving toward increased interruption: education disrupted, support systems weakening, grief deepening, and two children left holding more than they were ever meant to.

It was a critical moment, and the Back2Back team was equipped to step in. They weren’t replacing the family they’d lost; they were strengthening the family the siblings still had. Their grandmother and aunt opened their home to the brother and sister. Together with staff and each other, they began building a new life. The adults were supported and encouraged, equipped to remain present for the children. Educational support continued, and consistent relationships were enhanced. It wasn’t the family they were used to, but they knew they were safe and supported right where they were.

There was once a time when they believed their future would be stopped short; they feared that school, stability, and opportunities wouldn’t be available to them, but that is not the story they’re living today.

They now look toward a future in which they care for each other, standing sure that they will always have one another, surrounded by people who won’t leave. Their story is still being written. There were moments when everything could have gone another way, moments where grief and instability could have shaped what came next. Instead, consistent presence and support redirected them.

This is the power of your investment – when you choose to partner with staff, give toward programming, or donate generally toward the greatest needs, you are illustrating to young adults like Viraj and Amani they are not forgotten and their futures matter. Thank you for the ways you remind vulnerable populations they will always be pursued, there will always be restoration.
