More than a Report Card

Back2Back Ministries | More than a Report Card

Luisa* was overwhelmed. As a mother and grandmother to two boys in Back2Back D.R. programming, she often wondered if anyone else could see just how much her boys were holding. It was a moment and a question with which she was familiar.

Leah Martinez, Education Coordinator, recently met with her during a parent-teacher conference for the after-school programming. Luisa carried the heaviness of their struggles, and her own, into the meeting. Her fatigue was written all over her face. Quickly, the conversation revealed a painful reality.

One of the boys’ teachers at their public school had all but given up. The challenges felt too great. His progress seemed unlikely. The future looked discouraging.

As the mother shared her story, she spoke honestly about the emotional and mental weight she had been carrying. Watching her boys struggle year after year left her feeling hopeless. She had run out of solutions.

So she prayed. God, make a way. Please help me. Show me where I can find support for those I love most.

She learned about Back2Back’s Education Program soon after and immediately enrolled her boys.

“It felt like an answer to prayer,” she shared. And that answer has brought significant change to the family.

The boys now receive the additional academic support they need and are surrounded by adults who believe in them. The boys are believed in, and their educators know they’re both capable of growth and success. Luisa and her family are surrounded by a safety net of people who believe that, instead of being defined by our deficiencies, we should be encouraged and supported.

Her grandson, Javier*, was repeating a grade for a third time. It could have been easy to believe school simply wasn’t for him, but restoration often starts when someone refuses to give up.

Javier has made significant progress in both reading and math in the past year. His teacher has noticed the difference, commenting on improvements not only in his academics but also in his behavior and engagement in the classroom.

Javier is now preparing to move on to the fourth grade.

It may sound like a simple milestone, but for his family, it feels much bigger.

It is proof that a child is more than a report card.
More than a setback.
More than the opinions of people who have stopped expecting growth.

It is a reminder that when children receive the support they need, new possibilities emerge.

Today, Luisa no longer discusses hopelessness. She talks about encouragement, she raves about progress. And she shares about answered prayer.

Because when someone steps in to support a child at the right moment, the story doesn’t have to end where others expected it would. It becomes a story of reclamation instead.
