For months, the competition stretched across the school grounds. Small breaks in the school day allowed students to compete and grow their athletic abilities.
They gathered on dusty fields and crowded sidelines, cheering loudly for their teams as races were run and goals were scored. The classmates pushed themselves further than they thought possible. It began in January as Niger’s Great Oaks Academy’s annual athletic competition, and slowly grew into something bigger than a sporting event; it became a season marked by resilience and determination.
The games this year happened amidst a difficult season in Nigeria. The combination of security concerns in parts of Nigeria and a shortened academic year made planning the event a challenge. Staff and school leadership had to rethink how the competition could safely happen while still allowing students to participate fully.
Instead of canceling the games altogether, they adapted. Competitions were incorporated into the school’s regular sporting days, allowing events to continue gradually over two and a half months leading up to the grand finale.
Through it all, the students showed up.
They were divided into four “houses” and competed in football, volleyball, table tennis, track races, high jump, long jump, discus, shot put, and relay events. Junior and senior students alike trained hard, representing their teams with pride and persistence. What stood out the most wasn’t the competition itself, but the visible growth among the students.
Teachers and staff watched their students display great resilience and discipline. It was clear they had a strong desire to succeed. In a season where uncertainty could have easily overshadowed joy and connection, students instead found opportunities to work together; they encouraged one another, equally celebrating everyone’s accomplishments.
Students and staff alike worked hard – from planning to competing, everyone worked together closely to ensure everything could continue despite surrounding challenges.
And in the end, the games are a reminder that, even in difficult circumstances, children still need to run freely and celebrate together. They deserve to simply experience the joy of being kids. At the end of the day, the Inter House Games aren’t just about sports; they’re about belonging and confidence, about community, and the chance to keep moving forward.
