“I Like How You Speak to Us”

Profa!” The little girl’s brown eyes were warm with joy as she called for Back2Back staff, Mindy Mauricio. “I like how you guys speak.”

Mindy knelt and looked her in the eye as she asked, “What do you mean?”

“I like how you speak to us, all of you who teach us. It’s so kind,” she shared.

In the D.R., it can be commonplace for children not to be truly heard when they speak. And Back2Back staff intentionally taking time to ask questions and get to know each child is making a difference.

It may have been a small moment for the little girl, but for staff who prioritize showing up in love and as safe spaces, even one child noticing the kindness of words is a win. Together, with compassion and love, Back2Back staff are ensuring children know their voices matter, and we want to hear them.
