For many young people in Nigeria, the years between finishing school and entering university can feel like a long, uncertain waiting room. Exams are difficult to pass, jobs are scarce, and without support, even hardworking teens can lose momentum and hope.
Joshua* could have been one of them, stuck in the in-between, doing his best but struggling to fully move forward. Instead, because of advocates and supporters like you, his waiting years are becoming building years. He’s preparing for university and learning a skill with his hands that’s already changing his story.
Higher education in Nigeria can be a steep mountain to climb for many students. Each next step requires passing state-wide exams so demanding that some must take them multiple times to pass. This process can be long and uncertain, and as a result, Hope Program students are encouraged to learn a new skill, one they can do with their hands, to help earn income while preparing for university.
The goal is two-fold: students have options for success once they finish school, and they begin developing independence and sustainability as early as possible.
Because of your faithful support, students like Joshua* have access to these opportunities for growth. A year ago, he joined the Hope Program and took time discerning what skill he wanted to learn; three months ago, he decided on shoe-making. During his first class, he was told to create a pair of shoes for someone of his choosing.
“I wanted my first pair to bless someone who has long blessed me,” Joshua shared. “It was an easy decision to choose my House mum!”
Deborah and her husband, Nehemiah, have been Hope Parents in Nigeria for many years, opening their home and hearts to young men in need. When Joshua presented her with the finished shoes, tears filled her eyes as she realized the gift’s meaning – the young man she’d faithfully poured into, alongside her husband, was now giving back in his own way.
Together, Hope parents, sponsors, and advocates like you are helping vulnerable teens find safety, confidence, and purpose – equipping them to bless others just as they’ve been blessed.Your willingness to share your time, talents, and treasures allows students like Joshua to learn trades, discover their own identity and independence, and hope for their future.
