Juan was just nine years old, but he’d already been labeled “the problem.” Moved from a children’s home to a teen boys’ home, his reputation followed him: “too difficult to manage.” When he returned to the children’s home, he pushed every boundary, rejected authority, and seemed determined to prove the only thing he had ever been told: he was unworthy of love or connection.
The first step in intervention began with connection groups – a predictable, safe space for every child. At first, he resisted, but with consistent reminders that he was safe, loved, and heard, his defenses softened.
That summer, he attended Back2Back’s summer school, where each day began with a Bible verse reminding students they are chosen and loved. During those weeks, Juan formed a friendship with a local volunteer who invested deeply in him. When the volunteer learned more of Juan’s story, he committed to praying for him every single day. On the last day of classes, he pulled Juan aside.
“I have something to tell you,” he said gently. “God wants you to know you are loved, you are special, and He has a purpose just for you.”
Juan’s eyes grew wide. “You are telling me I am special?!” he asked, astonished. From that moment, he walked taller, prouder, with a smile reflecting new hope. He began engaging with peers, volunteering, and even performing in front of a large crowd at the end of the school year. Though nerves filled his face before stepping on stage, he spotted the volunteer who had spoken truth into his life. They locked eyes, and Juan felt calm. His life hasn’t looked the same since.
Without safe adults and safe spaces, children like Juan may never discover their true worth. But because one volunteer gave his time, talents, and treasures, a boy once labeled “too much” now knows he was created to be wholly loved, seen, and purposed.
This is the power of showing up.
