From Common Law to Celebration: A Haitian Wedding

Mirlande* and Gerardo* have built a life together. Faithful partners to one another since 2011 and mom and dad to their combined seven children, they have created a space of safety and love for over 15 years, but never got married. They moved to the Canaan area of Haiti in 2016 and, when Mirlande became a member of the church there, the couple was encouraged to marry in order to fully participate in church activities. Culturally, a wedding ceremony in Haiti results in a large celebration. While Mirlande and Gerardo have always wanted to share that special ceremony together, their finances never allowed for the costly event to take place. Instead, they pledged their love, raised their children, existed within a common law marriage, and hoped to one day hold a celebration and wedding ceremony.

“Common law marriage is very typical in Haiti because of the cost of a ceremony and party,” shared Sarah Ellis, Back2Back Haiti Stateside Manager. “Finding a location, inviting friends and family, and then feeding everyone is pricier than what most Haitian families can afford.”

Knowing about this hurdle so many families face, the Strong Families staff wanted to make the impossible possible for this family and take part in celebrating their commitment and love to each other. Since their very first Strong Families meeting in late 2023, Mirlande and Gerardo have been planning their special day. Their day finally arrived after much preparation, and together, with staff, family, and friends, they legally and publicly professed their dedication to one another at the Back2Back campus on July 27th.

It was a day full of laughter and joy as their children were present for, and participated in, the important occasion, and family members celebrated their ongoing commitment. Please join us in prayer that each of their children would better understand the importance of promises and the strength of their family. Pray also for the newlyweds – that they continue to invest in each other, and others, and honor the vows they were finally able to make.
