Embracing Tomorrow: One Student’s Story of Growth and Courage

He sat alone in his room in silence. As he watched the clouds move outside his window and the sun brought light into his eyeline, he reflected on where he’d been and where he wanted to go.

Idowu* felt emotions battling each other within. At 18 years old, he was preparing to take the entrance exam for Back2Back Nigeria’s trauma-informed school and felt equal parts excitement and sadness.

“I am excited at the prospect of exploring a new environment, connecting with new peers, and growing in my learning,” he shared. “I also feel tinges of sadness at the thought of leaving my current school, friends, and the comfort of an established routine.”

Idowu shared his feelings with trusted adults, and they assured him they understood. As he continued to reminisce about his memories and what he would potentially be leaving behind, they were swift to comfort him.

“We encouraged him to approach this transition with courage and to embrace the opportunity to forge new friendships while fully engaging with the lessons and adventure before him,” Back2Back staff shared. He took in their words, holding them close and seriously considering their wisdom.

Idowu took the exam and is now well on his way to creating new rhythms and forming new connections with his peers. Please join us in prayer over Idowu and so many students like him – that they understand change is inevitable, but doesn’t have to be scary, and they are never alone in any endeavour.
