Creating a Place to Belong

Back2Back Ministries | Creating a Place to Belong

Throughout June, Back2Back Cincinnati hosted a summer camp two days a week at a local high school, creating a welcoming space for students after summer school ended each day.

The first few afternoons were quiet. Many students stopped only long enough to grab a snack before heading home. They weren’t sure what to expect, and most kept to themselves.

Then, something started to shift.

More students remained as the weeks went on. Games stretched into conversations, and familiar faces returned every week. They first saw it as a quick stop for a snack, but it ultimately became a space where teens could laugh, engage, and simply be young men and women.

The hour between summer school ending and a bus arriving can be long and isolating, and often feels longer as they wait in the heat of the day.Back2Back Cincinnati staff responded to that wait time with a different type of offering: encouragement to just bring yourself and hang out – you belong here.

By keeping things simple with games, snacks, and consistent relationships, staff created opportunities for connection and trust to grow naturally. Students found adults who were willing to listen, encourage them, and walk alongside them through the ordinary moments of the day.

Sometimes restoration doesn’t begin with a major event. Sometimes it begins with a game of basketball, a shared snack, and someone who shows up again tomorrow.
