Miguel had a dream to stand on his own, earn his own living, and care for himself and his family. But stepping into independence isn’t simple for a young adult who’s spent most of his life in a Back2Back-run home for children and young adults with disabilities. The world beyond the property line felt big and overwhelming. Job interviews, public transportation, and self-management were skills he needed support to develop.
He has seen many miracles with his own eyes, and he knew he was surrounded by safe adults who could assist in bringing his desire for more independence and financial security to life. Staff felt excited by his goals, encouraging him to look for jobs in order to make his own income and purchase things of his own choosing.
Staff assisted him as he searched for jobs best fitting his skill set, allowing him increased freedom. He applied for several positions, and at each interview was accompanied by trusted staff, allowing him to walk into every interaction with confidence.
“We encouraged him to use his voice clearly,” shared Back2Back staff. “We told him he had the freedom to safely use his words and say whether he was interested in the jobs being offered to him or not.”
With each interview, the staff saw his morale growing, and his ability to voice his thoughts became easier with each stop. And after a few interviews, he was offered a job at a local doctor’s office as a cleaning manager! On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, he cleans and organizes a physical therapy office in the mornings.
This job opportunity is allowing more flexibility for Miguel, along with extra income, and providing so much more. He is learning how to make and keep a schedule, as he has to be up early on work days; he’s preparing his own food so he has breakfast before he leaves, and he has also learned to walk to the bus stops on his own to get to and from work safely.
“We accompanied him in the beginning to the bus stops, but over time, Miguel knew he could do it on his own,” shared Back2Back staff. “And he has – he knows schedules are important, how to locate the correct bus, and the paths to walk to get home safely.”
Miguel’s social skills and knowledge of the city he calls home have improved greatly; he is managing his money responsibly and with pride. He finds fun and purpose in his role, and his emotional regulation and presence have grown exponentially.
Currently, Miguel is saving money for things he wants for himself and also saving to help support his mom with some of her needs. He is a young man happy to have found fulfilling responsibility; his joy grows right along with his independence.
He was a young man in search of more freedom, and today, through his own dedication and the support of faithful staff and supportive sponsors, he turned a dream into his reality.
