A New Ohana: How Love Made a Family in Linares

One way Back2Back sites around the world engage with their local communities and partner with like-minded individuals is by sharing with local churches about the mission and vision. Recently, Back2Back Linares staff held an informational session at a local church, inviting individuals and families to take part in what God is doing on-site. There, they met a local couple named Joselyn and Raymundo, and they were eager to join in God’s call to care for the vulnerable.

Joselyn began visiting regularly as a mentor to a young woman in the home, building a relationship with her and connecting with her younger brother as well. With each visit, their bond deepened; the siblings became connected to Joselyn’s entire family. This year, Joselyn and Raymundo became certified foster parents – the first of their kind in Linares!

“This is a big step for them as a family, but it’s also an example and a seed we believe will grow into many more families opening their homes and hearts to children who need safe spaces and loving adults,” shared Rick Bursey, Back2Back Linares Co-Director.

Once certified, Joselyn and Raymundo made the easy decision to open their home to the siblings they had come to love during their time volunteering. Alongside their two biological children, they joyfully welcomed the brother and sister home at the beginning of October.

“Something we always do for children or families transitioning to a new chapter, whether returning to a biological family or moving into a Hope Home, is to hold a celebration,” explained Rick. “To commemorate this special moment, we threw a Hawaiian-themed Luau at the home.”

As children and adults celebrated together, Hawaiian words were shared, and Joselyn stood up to speak.

“There’s one more Hawaiian word I want to teach you all,” Joselyn said. “The word is ohana, and it means family.” Then she invited her husband, their children, and their new foster children to stand beside her. “This is my ohana,” she said, tears glistening in her eyes and a smile on her face.

The siblings are thrilled for this new space to call home and excited to be part of a family that chose them specifically. In Linares, Back2Back serves as the foster agency, working closely with the government. Staff will continue investing in both children, providing programming through sponsorship and consistent, holistic care to ensure their ongoing growth and well-being.

Vulnerable children find home and belonging when faithful advocates like you follow God’s call to open their homes, hearts, and hands to the vulnerable. Without willing, safe, and trained adults saying “yes,” children never fully experience the healing that comes from a healthy family environment.

Please join Back2Back in prayer over this transition – for the siblings to feel rooted, loved, and heard, and for this family to grow in strength and love. Your continued generosity and prayers make moments like this possible.
