For 15-year-old Anika*, dreams were the only place she felt secure. In those dreams, she sat in a bright classroom with a kind teacher, learning freely alongside peers. For a girl who had spent her whole life in Nigeria, that dream felt simple, yet increasingly out of reach.
When her parents separated, Anika chose to live with her mom, who was unemployed and praying daily for provision. School became impossible, and for two years, her education, seemingly her hope, stood still.
A quiet, defining moment occurred when Back2Back staff walked through her village, offering prayer to anyone who needed it. Anika stepped forward and bravely named the desire she’d been carrying alone: “I want to go to school again. I want my mom to be okay.”
Because she had missed so much class time, she struggled to pass the entrance exam for the nearby Back2Back trauma-informed school. But staff, and Anika, refused to let this be the end of her story. She began attending Igmin Kibe Education Center for daily tutoring, rebuilding not just her academic foundation, but her confidence.
In August, she tried again, and this time, she passed.
Her joy was unmistakable as she walked into her classroom for the first time, greeting her peers, taking her seat, and realizing her long-held dream had finally become real.
“I am ready to explore what God has chosen for my future,” she shares confidently.
Today, Anika is thriving – in school, in Back2Back programming, and in her relationship with a caring sponsor. When her sponsor learned her mom was struggling to earn income, she stepped forward again, helping provide a grinding machine so Anika’s mom could launch a sustainable small business.
When one person believes in a child’s potential, education becomes possible, families gain stability, and entire communities feel the ripple effect. Anika and her mom are now helping neighbors as they once were helped, reminders that healing becomes contagious when someone chooses to invest.
Do you feel called to help create moments like this, where a single yes becomes the turning point in a family’s future? Many children and caregivers across Nigeria, and every Back2Back site, are waiting for someone to step into their story.
Together, we can ensure no child is left behind, every safe adult knows their worth, and brighter futures take root, one yes at a time.
