Pravya* has watched her sister all her life. She watched her attend school as the first in their family, watched her study diligently and set an example of hard work and dedication to education. For as long as she can remember, Pravya wanted to emulate her big sister, following in her footsteps, paving new paths for a future unfolding.
For many of the families served in inner city India, continuing education isn’t pursued. Due to financial restraints and the need for everyone to contribute, marriages are often arranged after a young adult completes 10th class (the U.S. equivalent of 12th grade). Back2Back’s Strong Families Program allows families like Pravya’s choose alternate routes for their children, while also receiving assistance and training to become more self-sustaining family units.
Pravya has followed in her sister’s footsteps, along with her two younger siblings, who all study at an English medium (English is taught/spoken) school. When she isn’t in school or studying, she helps around her family home, cooking, cleaning, and washing. She also helps her younger siblings and ensures they get to school each day.
While her parents work hard everyday, collecting remnants in their neighborhood and reselling them for income, Pravya takes her duty as being an example to her siblings seriously. She believes she is where she’s at currently because she watched her sister forge new paths, and her desire is to set the same precedent for the younger eyes watching her.
Pravya is humble, obedient, helpful, calm, and always open to learning new things. Back2Back staff believe this combination of attributes will allow her to excel in and out of the classroom. As she and her siblings pursue education and bring light to their entire community, we await with anticipation to see her future visions come to fruition.
