There was an excitement in the air as the Cancun Strong Families moms entered Wal-Mart, some for the very first time. As they took in the Christmas displays and music over the loudspeaker, they began to form a plan for their shopping trip.
Recently, Back2Back staff took the Strong Family moms shopping for their family’s Christmas gifts. Each woman had a budget for the gifts and a plan for each of their family members.
“They were nervous at first,” shared Amy Perez, Back2Back staff. “Some of them had never been in a store like this before, and they wanted to make sure they stretched their money as best they could and chose the right gifts.”
The women spread out in the store, carefully choosing gifts for each of their children. A few of the moms went straight to the Barbie aisle, and onlookers could see them flash back to their own childhoods, remembering what they played with, what they hoped for each Christmas.
“We are excited to do these outings, because it is an opportunity to remind them they know their children best, they have a voice and choice that is valuable and special,” explained Amy.
The goal of every moment and outing with Strong Families is to empower them and help them see they are capable and worthy to parent, lead their families, and use their voices.
The moms were able to find gifts for each of their family members and they all remained within their budgets. The air of anticipation continued long after the shopping trip ended as a group of women came to realize they, like their children, are fully known and loved.
