Five young adults gathered around a table at a local community center. There were five cardboard boxes on the table, and each student stood in front of one, full of anticipation. Nearby, Back2Back staff smiled as they told the students to open them.
Recently, five young adults in the Strong Families Program graduated high school and entered university, creating the Hope Education Program in this part of Mexico. All five students graduated in the summer of 2021, and all but one were attending university classes virtually due to the pandemic. “It was a difficult transition for them to take university level courses online,” shared Amy Kelly, Back2Back staff. As a result of this difficulty, and hoping to make the transition easier, staff purchased five new laptops with the help of a generous donor.
The teens opened their boxes and gasps of delight filled the air. “They had no idea what the boxes held,” shared Amy. “Watching them open new laptops was like being with them on Christmas morning – they were completely surprised.”
The teens are growing and thriving in their new classroom environments and are slowly transitioning back to in-person classes. The laptops were a significant help in their virtual learning and will help each teen succeed in and out of the classroom.
