Receiving the Care He Needs

Thirteen-year old Luis Fernando limped to a spot in the grass to rest. His foot was hurting, but he hadn’t twisted it. He went to his caregivers with concern in his voice. “My foot is hurting badly; I can’t walk on it, but I don’t know what’s wrong.”

After looking at his foot, caregivers realized he had developed a fungus. They applied necessary creams, hopeful it would treat the pain, and Luis Fernando could get back to his favorite activities.

“The fungus just continued to get worse as the week went on,” explained Adina Bailey, Mama Paulita’s Children’s Home staff. “He went from limping to not being able to stand on it at all.” Luis Fernando took one more day to apply cream and keep his foot elevated, hopeful to be playing soccer again soon. “When it didn’t improve, we called doctors in the area,” said Adina.

Staff at Mama Paulita’s Children’s Home found a foot doctor who specialized in treating fungi and athlete’s foot. Luis Fernando was prescribed an antibiotic and a foot cream, and was told to rest until his foot was healed.
