When Back2Back staff first met Elena*, she was incredibly shy. Staff did their best to engage her in conversation, but she rarely spoke. She took in everything with a keen curiosity but didn’t interact.
Staff diligently pursued her, ensuring she felt comfortable as they got to know her and her interests. Each day, they saw Elena’s guard slowly come down. She first engaged with the center’s staff, then hesitantly with peers, becoming more involved in the center’s activities, specifically in painting, crafts, and games. When she finally chose to use her voice, it was to make a request.
She approached her mentor at the center, “There are no music classes, but I would love to play the piano. . .” she looked at her wide-eyed and brave. No teacher was available, but Elena had thought things through, asking if she could teach herself using YouTube.
“I was so impressed with her determination and problem-solving abilities,” her mentor shared. “I agreed to her suggestion, encouraging her to move forward with learning; she comes to the center every Tuesday now, spending most of her time watching videos and practicing on the piano.”
After months of faithful practice, it was time for Elena to make her debut at the center’s Christmas party; she’d put significant effort into learning a song just for this occasion. She made her way to the front of the room, and her love for music shone through her trepidation. She took her seat at the piano, started the song, and everyone present was amazed by her talent.
Elena’s story is an inspiration to so many; it is a reminder for everyone present that even when we lack resources or feel afraid, perseverance and a love for learning can overcome any barrier.
