Haiti is located on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 50 miles southeast of Cuba and 565 miles southeast of Florida. The country is about the size of Maryland, and shares the island with the Dominican Republic. The Republic of Haiti is the poorest and most densely populated country in the Western Hemisphere. Due to violence, AIDS, and natural disaster, Haiti has the highest percentage of orphans of any country in the Western Hemisphere. Before the 2010 earthquake, the United Nations estimated there were 430,000 orphans. The population of Haiti is approximately 11 million.
Back2Back began working in Haiti in 2012. Back2Back Haiti partners with children’s homes in the Port-au-Prince area to provide holistic care for children. The Hope Program also offers higher education, family-style living, and life-skills training to teens. Back2Back’s campus provides a training and meeting space for other non-profits working in Haiti in an effort to unify and equip those serving vulnerable populations in-country.
