Relationships have always been a priority at Back2Back. We look for opportunities to strengthen connections between the children we serve and the important people in their lives. With that in mind, in 2018, Back2Back kicked off mission trips dedicated to child sponsors. The goal was to create unique experiences for the sponsor and sponsor child to share, so that their relationship was deepened. It was a huge success! The difference between a “typical” mission trip, where you visit children’s homes and complete necessary work projects, and a sponsorship trip is that it’s shorter, and filled with field trips, and shared meals.
If you’re on the cusp of deciding whether or not a sponsorship trip is right for you, consider these three benefits:
1. You’ll get to know your sponsor child’s personality.
There’s only so much you can learn from a letter. You may know their favorite color and their birthday, but what does the cadence of their laugh sound like? Do they tell jokes to break the ice? Are they athletic or more artistic? Are they a leader in their home? The one-on-one time you will have with your sponsor child will answer these, and many more questions.
2. You’ll experience a new culture, and see your sponsor child in their own environment.
Have you ever eaten with your hands, like they do in India? Do you know it’s customary to smash cake in someone’s face when it’s their birthday in Mexico? Do you want to drink fresh coconut water from a coconut in your sponsor child’s backyard? Visiting your sponsor child allows you to experience a whole new culture with an expert guide alongside.
3. You’ll understand you have more in common with the orphaned and vulnerable child than you may have thought.
We all have hurts which have shaped who we are and how we interact with others. We’ve had mentors and people who’ve stepped into and propelled our stories forward. We are each deeply loved by Jesus. Time with your sponsor child will likely leave you with an understanding – whether in Haiti, India, Mexico or Nigeria – our stories all are in the Hands of the Father.
