Meeting Needs

Eli* looked upset as he walked up to Back2Back staff member, Eloise. He came to where she stood and looked up at her with big, brown eyes.

“Elo, I am sad.”

Eloise bent down to be eye level with him. “What is the matter, Eli?”

“I am sad because I cannot eat. My tooth hurts too much.”

A couple days later, Eloise accompanied Eli and his mother to a local dentist to see what could be done about the young boy’s toothache.

“When we went to the dentist, they realized Eli had an infection in two of his teeth,” shared Eloise. They left the dentist office with a week’s worth of antibiotics and a plan to return as soon as they were finished.

Once Eli had finished taking the antibiotic they all returned to the dentist. Two baby teeth were pulled and Eli is feeling much happier as a result.

A week following the procedure, Eloise had placed a chocolate for herself on the table as a snack for later. She left the room for a moment and when she came back the chocolate was gone. She began looking around for the candy when she heard a giggle from the corner of the room.

“Eli! Did you eat my chocolate?”

The young boy giggled and shook his head no.

“Eli, if you did, you must tell me – I won’t be mad.”

He smiled again, a small smear of chocolate in the corner of his mouth. “Okay. Yes. I just had to have a bite of your chocolate! My teeth feel so much better now!”
